Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary Opened in 1993, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary spans over 250 acres and began with just three orphaned chimpanzees. Today, it is home to 26 well-cared-for chimps. Established by Lonrho Africa, the Jane Goodall Institute, and Kenya Wildlife Services, the sanctuary provides a haven for orphaned and abused chimpanzees. With 24-hour veterinary care and a stimulating quarantine enclosure, new arrivals are carefully rehabilitated before joining one of the two large groups living in natural enclosures separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River. The chimps enjoy set feeding times, indoor enclosures at night, and days filled with exploring, climbing, and socializing. The sanctuary is a testament to successful conservation and is a delightful place to visit.
Sweetwaters Game Reserve Covering 24,000 acres, Sweetwaters Game Reserve offers stunning views of Mount Kenya and is the closest reserve to Nairobi. Home to all of the Big Five, it boasts the highest game-to-area ratio of any park or reserve in Kenya. The floodlit waterhole provides exceptional and secluded game viewing, especially at night.

The park has three main gates, offering access to its rich wildlife and stunning landscapes. In 1977, the park became a sanctuary for the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes, brought from western Kenya for conservation. This effort was part of a broader Kenyan government initiative to protect the country’s wildlife. The 1980s saw the introduction of rhinos, and in 1984, Lake Nakuru was designated Kenya’s first government-protected rhino sanctuary, underscoring its pivotal role in wildlife conservation.

Hot Air Balloon Safari in Masai Mara

Expertly guided into the basket just before take-off, balloons ascend just before sunrise, when the plains’ breeze is still cool. Drifting with prevailing winds across the expansive landscape, the flight above the plains is serenely silent save for the occasional burner hiss. The pilot adjusts altitude by regulating hot air flow, descending for close-up wildlife views over the plains or rising over tree canopies and riverine forests. This unforgettable experience is the perfect start to a day exploring this remarkable park on safari.

Best of Tanzania Safari
Itinerary at a glance (Day 01 – 09)
Itinerary Details
Day 1 – 5
Zanzibar
Just a short flight from the Tanzania mainland lies the idyllic Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar. Famous for intoxicating aromas of spices, beautiful white sand beaches, and warm turquoise waters, the heart of the island is undoubtedly Stone Town, a fascinating step back in time with narrow winding streets, Swahili traders and local fisherman, and the daily call to prayer in this predominantly muslim town.
In addition to its fascinating Swahili and Arab history, Zanzibar offers world class scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and, at certain times of year, kitesurfing. There is also endemic wildlife in the Johazi Forest.
Nicknamed “Spice Island,” Zanzibar was an important part of the slave and ivory trade as a connecting point between the mainland interior and the Middle East. This made the likes of some slave traders, like Tippu Tip, very rich men. A walk around the Sultan’s Palace is reminiscent of this dark past. More recent pop culture will undoubtedly lead to the doorway of Zanzibar’s most famous son, Queen’s iconic frontman, Freddie Mercury.
- Meet & Greet: Meet & Greet – Zanzibar
- Land Transfers: Private transfer to the hotel
- City: Zanzibar port

Day 5 – 7
Southern Serengeti
The vast open plains of the southern Serengeti offer insight into why Serengeti was so named, being derived from the Maasai word for the endless plains. To the east the plains stretch out to the picturesque Gol kopjes, imposing ancient granite outcrops that are islands of biodiversity and provide refuge from the open plains for all the cats. The Maasai steppe in the east is home to huge clans of spotted hyena who are probably the apex predator in this area.
The Serengeti is perhaps the most famous African wilderness area, its name synonymous with the notion of safari for nearly a hundred years. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers 14,750 km2 (5,700 mi2) of premiere game viewing in Acacia woodlands, open grasslands, and undulating savannahs interspersed with seasonal rivers. The park on the northern side borders the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and, together with several other smaller reserves and conservation areas, forms the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.
The Great Wildebeest Migration
Between the months of December and March the southern Serengeti and neighboring Ngorongoro Conservation Area play host to the Great Wildebeest Migration in incredible numbers. During February and March, close to 300,000 baby wildebeest are born within a six week period, and the bush teems with new life.
Predatory action is at a high and this is one of the best areas and times to look for cheetah. Lions and leopard can also be found, generally around the Lake Ndutu and Acacia tortilis woodlands in the middle of the plains. The extremely rare African hunting dogs have also made a return to the south near Kakesio and Maswa.
Note: The Great Wildebeest Migration and other wildlife phenomena and sightings are natural events and therefore can never be guaranteed.
Nyikani Migration Camp
Experience & Activities
In addition to the almost two million wildebeest and zebra that move through the area each year, Ndutu is home to cheetah, lion, giraffe, and hundreds of bird species. During the calving season, the wildebeest give birth to up to 8,000 babies a day.
Accommodations
Tent
There are 12 tents in king, twin, or triple configuration and one tent family room, all with private, shaded verandahs overlooking the Serengeti ecosystem. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom, flush toilet, double wash basins with running water, safari-style bucket shower and other essential amenities. There is a power point with universal adapter, writing desk & digital safe.
- Meet & Greet: Meet & Greet – Zanzibar
- City: Serengeti ecosystem
- Accommodation: Nyikani Migration Camp
Day 7 – 9
Ngorongoro Crater
A veritable Garden of Eden, the Ngorongoro Crater is only 260 km2 (100mi2) in size yet has some of the highest densities of lion and spotted hyena found anywhere in the world. The view from the crater rim at 2,000 feet above the floor is nothing short of breathtaking. The thick mountain forests of the crater highlands strike a sharp contrast with the short grass plains of the crater floor with its yellow fever Acacia woodlands and streams. The soda lake Magadi in the center of the crater floor sometimes attracts lesser flamingos, and the area is known for very large tusked elephants, black rhino, and great predator action.
Easily accessible from Arusha, the three million year old Ngorongoro Crater was once a gigantic volcano that some suggest was even higher than Mt Kilimanjaro. It is the largest intact caldera in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walks are available on the rim in certain areas, but game viewing on the crater floor is strictly by vehicle and on designated game drive routes. Local Maasai pastoralists and their villages surround the western side of the crater whilst the eastern side is heavily forested up to the farming town of Karatu.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) extends from the crater highlands all the way past Olduvai Gorge and onto the short grasslands of the southern Serengeti and Lake Ndutu. But the wildlife does not adhere to these boundaries and there is very good wildlife viewing, especially during peak calving season when the NCA plains play host to the Great Wildebeest Migration and the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest in a short span of time. This brings predator action, especially with large hyena clans, cheetah, and the return of African hunting dogs.
The NCA is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (111 miles) west of Arusha. The area is named after the Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera whose name derives from the sound made by the cattle bells of the local Maasai pastoralists.
The Castle At Ngorongoro
The Castle at Ngorongoro offers guests an excellent base from which to explore the numerous attractions of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. With only eight rooms, guests are assured of hospitality befitting royalty in a location within easy reach of the Ngorongoro Crater and many other natural and cultural attractions. Whether lazing at the swimming pool, learning about the rich pre-history of the area, or wandering the forest trails in search of birds, there is an array of activities over and above game drives.
Experience & Activities
Over and above the legendary wildlife, guests at the Castle at Ngorongoro are free to relax entirely at the Castle or join a variety of interesting excursions to nearby attractions.
The Ngorongoro Crater lies within an extinct volcano, creating a uniquely enclosed ecosystem said to contain the greatest density of large mammals in Africa. Descend into the crater in a customized safari vehicle in the company of an experienced guide to witness the diversity of predators and prey and learn of their interdependence. Truly an iconic African wildlife experience.
There are a variety of activities to choose from when staying at The Castle. During your stay, you can focus on the wildlife, learn about modern Tanzanian culture, or get a glimpse of the origins of mankind.
